Graham Capill's arithemetic is faulty. According to the latest opinion poll, his party has actually lost support, and
this process may not be over yet. In the November 1999 election, it polled two point four per cent, yet it now polls
barely above two per cent.
The CHP has consistently failed to break even three per cent of the party vote, let alone the five per cent threshold,
yet it has been in existence for the last decade. It is apparent that the CHP lacks members of sufficient professional
calibre that would enable the party to do so.
It is significant that this is the first TVNZ and TV3 poll since the government announced its abortion law review, but
the Christian Heritage Party has not benefited from increased anti-abortion voter support. However, the government has
won increased support in the same series of polls.
The lesson for mainstream parties is clear- court the insignificant hardline fundamentalist vote at your peril, as it
may cost urban liberal support in demographically dense areas.
