Labour Endorses Tamihere’s Plans To Appropriate the Property Rights of Hapu and Iwi.
“ Labour’s Maori policy is an attempt to appropriate the legally recognised rights of hapu and iwi under Article Two of the Treaty of Waitangi,” Tutekawa Wyllie, the New Zealand First Maori Affairs spokesperson, said today.
“ The sneaky little provision in the Labour policy just released that 20% of fishing quota will be allocated on a non tribal basis is a threat to all future Treaty settlements.
“ Labour’s policy has clearly been written by the their party apparatchiks, not by the tangata whenua. It reflects their paternalistic attitudes.
“ I see absolutely no need for a another new bureaucracy, this one called a Ministry for Maori Economic and Social Development.
“ Maori do not need more grossly overpaid Wellington bureaucrats telling us what to do.
“ New Zealand First will ensure that Maori will be given the tools under the Treaty to do the job themselves,” concluded Mr Wyllie.
