More than 600 people attended a public rally in Tauranga this afternoon to support their local MP, Winston Peters, and
his re-election campaign.
During his speech Mr Peters spoke about MMP, his efforts on behalf of taxpayers in the Winebox case, and the future of
Tauranga—New Zealand’s fastest growing city.
He told his supporters that the two old parties and big business interests had targeted Tauranga in a desperate bid to
remove New Zealand First from the political scene.
“The people of Tauranga won’t be fooled by the interests who want to shut Tauranga up by shutting me up. Tauranga is not
for sale.
“Locally, the public are looking for MPs who put constituents’ concerns before the Party Caucus – and the Party
Hierarchy.
“The public are looking for representatives who will be their voice in Wellington and have a track record of taking on
central government and the establishment – not some party hack rubber stamp.
“They want independent thinkers who will do the right thing by them regardless of the personal, financial or political
cost,” said Mr Peters.
