Frustration at Wool Board Plans-ACT

Published: Wed 21 Jul 1999 11:13 AM
ACT's Kaikoura candidate Graham Hewett says he's amazed at the audacity of the N.Z Wool Board in its latest attempt to shore up the failing structure.
The former Federated Farmers Meat and Wool Section Vice Chairman says wool growers needs have been neglected and ignored for too long by those who spend their hard earned levies.
"More suitable structures need to be put in place to ensure woolgrowers can control how their hard earned levies are spent"
Graham Hewett says "The 100 million dollars of wool growers reserves should be put aside into a trust account, until growers themselves decide where these funds should be invested.
"The country's Wool growers should be given the choice of funding research or marketing programmes for their own wool".
"Many Wool growers are outraged by the lack of opportunity to question the boards strategies-and during many area meetings there's been strong disagreement against the board's direction.
"The time has come once and for all to rid the self perpetuating myth being promoted by the Wool Board that they are essential to the wool industry. The Board is an anachronistic relic of a bygone era and should be chucked in the dust bin once and for all," said Graham Hewett.
