Seymour challenges Twyford to front up to Banff Avenue residents
Epsom MP David Seymour has today called on Housing Minister Phil Twyford to front up to Banff Avenue residents to
discuss their concerns about a proposed five-storey housing development.
Last week, Mr Seymour organised a community meeting at the request of local residents in response to the lack of
consultation from Housing New Zealand.
“Rather than resorting to cheap politicking, Mr Twyford needs to concern himself with the performance of Housing New
Zealandand its secretive culture”, says Mr Seymour.
“My staff spent many hours seeking information from Housing New Zealand and were stonewalled between December last year
and this earlier month.
“We were told in March that Housing New Zealand had no information to share and yet just a few weeks later resource
consent for the development was lodged. Clearly, it has not been up front about its plans.”
“I will support the people of Banff Avenue to get the best possible outcome for them. It’s very important that the
occupants of any new housing development are fully supported with wrap-around services.
“The people of Epsom are decent and kind. However, until now, Housing New Zealand has ignored their concerns about
anti-social behaviour at its existing properties.
“If we are to have this social housing development, I will work with the residents of Banff Avenue and Housing New
Zealand to create a model project which includes appropriate amenities.
“All residents, including those who will live in the new development, deserve to be able to go about their business in
the knowledge they are safe and secure.
“At the same time, the new residents, whether they be elderly, families, or people with disabilities, need the social
supports that are appropriate to make their lives comfortable.
“I look forward to Mr Twyford addressing the people of Banff Avenue as soon as possible. I will organise the meeting for
him”, says Mr Seymour.
