Foreign Ownership Register Urgently Needed
A register of foreign land and housing ownership is urgently needed to gain an understanding of the true extent of foreign ownership, especially in Auckland, says New Zealand First and Northland Member of Parliament Rt Hon Winston Peters.
“National’s stubbornness over not counting sales shows it doesn’t want to admit the truth – that its immigration ‘free for all’ is undermining the chances of Kiwis to own their own home or farmland.
“They have helped create a housing crisis in Auckland and allowed a million hectares of land to be bought up by foreign owners.
“The fact is foreign ownership of New Zealand properties, businesses and houses pose major risks to our economy and sovereignty.
“To deal with this problem New Zealand First has a Land Transfer (Foreign Ownership of Land Register) Amendment Bill which will ensure a comprehensive register of all foreign-owned New Zealand land is compiled and made available to the general public and policy makers.
“It is time New Zealanders knew just who owns our land and houses,” Mr Peters says.
