We can do more: Refugee quota should be doubled
New Zealand is a better country than National’s miserable increase in the refugee quota that ignores our obligations to the international community and people in need, says Opposition Leader Andrew Little.
“It is a sad day when the Government can’t find the basic humanity to double the quota when it hasn’t increased for 29 years. New Zealand is a better place than this.
“I’ve seen first-hand the conditions in overseas camps when I visited the Zaatari camp in Jordan. People living there are determined, resourceful and want to get into safe countries. They can’t simply go home.
“New Zealanders are a big-hearted, generous people who would happily double the quota. It is right that we do our bit on the world stage. Today’s announcement doesn’t go nearly far enough,” says Andrew Little.
