Cash for cans and bottles scheme a great initiative
The new Incentive to Recycle Report from Envision NZ recommending a return to offering cash for empty drink containers is a great initiative, says Labour’s Environment spokesperson David Parker.
“It’s disheartening to see that millions of dollars of Government grants to boost beverage container recycling have had no impact on our poor rate of recycling.
“It would be a simple solution to return to an empty bottle being worth 10 cents if it was handed in instead of seeing them tossed away.
“I welcome the proposal as it would save New Zealanders many millions of dollars annually in waste disposal costs and reduce litter.
“Countries that have mandatory deposits on drink bottles have significantly less litter and waste.
“Labour thanks the proponents of the scheme for their considerable work. We add our support to the proposal,” says David Parker.
