Member’s Bill to Ban Street Prostitution
New Zealand First has submitted a Member’s Bill into the ballot that if passed into law would make street prostitution
illegal, effectively restricting prostitution to brothels.
Social Policy spokesperson Asenati Lole-Taylor says the Prostitution Reform (Control of Street Prostitution) Amendment
Bill comes at a time when offensive and criminal behaviour by street walkers and their pimps is turning some city
suburbs into sleazy red light districts.
“There has been a raft of failed Bills treating street prostitution as some sort of genteel occupation instead of
acknowledging that it is a conduit for serious anti-social behaviour and criminal activity.
“Our Member’s Bill would make it easy for the police to take enforcement action to rid New Zealand of street
prostitution and allow people to again feel safe in their neighbourhoods.
“Police are hamstrung by current laws which only allows for them to arrest street walkers and pimps for offensive
behaviour.
“The Member’s Bill sends a strong message to the prostitution industry that New Zealanders have had enough of street
prostitution and all the damage it causes,” says Mrs Lole-Taylor.
