King keeps close eye on home insulation
Labour is keeping a close eye on the Government’s promise to insulate all Housing New Zealand houses by the end of next
year, says Annette King.
As at 30 September 2012 the Government had 6,983 properties left to insulate under Housing New Zealand’s Energy
Efficiency Retrofit programme.
“That is no small feat given in the three months to September 2012 Housing Minister Phil Heatley only managed to
insulate 917 homes, compared with 4921 between 1 April 2012 – 30 June 2012.
“There needs to be 1,400 a quarter to meet the Ministers deadline by the end of next year. Is he on a strategic go-slow
or just falling behind schedule?
“Phil Heatley has previously boasted about the progress of this scheme with John Key also weighing in with a personal assurance that National would fulfil its ‘2011 election promise to insulate every state house where practicable’.
“Families living in sub-standard conditions don’t need words they need a warm, dry home.
“The health benefits of a warm home are well known. A Minister of Health worth his salt would also have a vested
interest in this programme and ensure that it sticks to schedule.
“Furthermore, John Key has admitted getting private sector rentals are up to scratch relies largely on the Government
having its house in order.
“There is a lot riding on the Government’s timetable for state tenants and all New Zealanders. I want to make sure its
promises come to more than Insul-Fluff,” Annette King said.
