10,000 More Women Now Out Of Work
A further 10,000 more women are now struggling to financially support their families after a significant increase in
unemployment, Labour Women’s Affairs Sue Moroney said.
“Over the past twelve months 27,000 women have lost their jobs in New Zealand, 10,000 of those in the three months until
December,” Sue Moroney said.
“Where is the help for these people? I am concerned that we now have record numbers of people out of work and there
still appears to be no plan to assist these people back to work.
“I am also concerned that these figures may still not tell the real story of female unemployment. How many women have
given up and gone on to the DPB or simply decided not to even try and return to the workforce after having children, and
how many women have had their part-time or casual hours cutback?
“When is the Minister of Women's Affairs Pansy Wong going to advocate for her Government to create jobs in areas of the
economy that improve employment options for women?
“Her silence on issues such as unemployment is disgraceful.
“As children head back to school the financial pressure on families is going to increase. The Government needs to
finally wake-up and realise that it is going to need to do something about unemployment,” Sue Moroney said.
