Stop the Rot -- Saving our Kauri must be top priority
Investing in research funding to fight the devastating effects of Kauri dieback has to be at the top of the agenda for the Government’s conservation funding, say West Auckland MPs David Cunliffe and Lynne Pillay.
Auckland Regional Council (ARC) and Landcare Research have already undertaken a research programme and have put considerable resources into tackling this disease which is killing stunning Kauri trees throughout the Waitakere Ranges and in other areas of the country.
“We congratulate ARC for all of their efforts to date in research, raising awareness and educating the public about how they can help – such as strict cleaning of footwear and tyres,” said David Cunliffe MP.
“And our community and environmental groups have been fantastic too, working tirelessly to ensure people are aware of what they can do to minimise the risk of spread of the disease.“
Labour while in government worked with the three councils – Auckland Regional, Waitakere, and Rodney – to introduce the Waitakere Ranges Heritage Area Act to provide long term protection from ad hoc development in the Waitakere Ranges now and into the future.
“Now it is time for the government to step up and ensure conservation funding is available to stop the rot. Our Kauri trees are symbolic and absolutely unique to all Kiwis and visitors to New Zealand,” said Lynne Pillay.
