Hon Tariana Turia Co-Leader of the Maori Party 28 May 2009 ENERGY: Maori to gain from $323m retrofit
The Maori Party welcomes the priority given to retrofit housing with $323.3 million allocated to insulate and heat homes
built before 2000.
“Our election manifesto gave a clear commitment that we will expand retrofit programmes to ensure homes meet achievable
Warm Home Standards to WHO levels of 18°C minimum,” Tariana Turia said.
“We know that decent housing is essential to good health and wellbeing and we’re pleased to know that priority will be
given to homes with families suffering poor health – a disproportionate number of whom will be whanau Maori.” The
opportunity for community service card holders to be eligible for a grant of up to $3000 is also welcomed, the
co-leaders said.
“We have been a strong advocate for these initiatives in the energy portfolio and we are sure this new money will have
an immediate impact. It’s also great to know that this new money will create many jobs.”
