New Flat Bush senior high school to open in 2011
Education Minister Chris Carter today announced that Flat Bush, a suburb of Manukau City, will be getting a new senior
high school, expected to open in 2011.
The school, which is currently referred to as Ormiston Road Senior High School, will be a Year 11-13 school taking the
majority of its initial intake from Mission Heights Junior College, due to open in 2009.
Chris Carter said the school is the fourth of eight schools being established as part of a significant government
investment aimed at meeting the projected population growth for Flat Bush of 40,000 by 2020, including more than 8,500
school age children.
“This is an exciting time for Manukau City. The booming population has brought some opportunities to develop schools
that will be purpose built and serve the community well,” Chris Carter said.
An establishment board of trustees, yet to be appointed, will have responsibility for appointing a principal,
determining school policy and governance practices, as well as ensuring the school reflects the needs and aspirations of
the emerging local community.
The school will enrol students in Year 11 from Term One 2011. An enrolment scheme is to be established to ensure roll
growth can be managed.
Chris Carter said the senior high school will be the first of three schools planned for the Ormiston Road campus.
The other Ormiston Road schools, a primary school (Years 1-6) and a junior high school (Years 7-10), will open in around
2013 depending on the rate of population growth. The long-term plan for Flat Bush also includes two additional primary
schools.
In the 2008/09 financial year the government will invest $466 million in school property which equates to an increase of
over 30 percent since 1999. Since 2000 the government has allocated $3.385 billion to build 42 new schools and kura as
well as upgrading existing facilities.
