National all hot air on protecting rail workers
The National Party’s claim in Parliament this afternoon that they speak for rail workers is one of the best comedy acts we have seen in the House this year, Finance Minister Michael Cullen said today.
“We were aware before the transaction to purchase the rail operation went through that we would need to take steps to protect rail workers with entitlements to the Government Superannuation Fund,” Dr Cullen said.
“That is why we had a Supplementary Order Paper ready to go just hours after taking ownership to allow these workers to keep their entitlements when they become KiwiRail employees.
“I’m glad the National Party took the opportunity in the House today to attack the government’s moves to protect assets and to invest in New Zealand’s infrastructure. They are welcome to continue to do so in the months ahead.”
