Minister opens Rainbow Springs aviary
Conservation Minister Steve Chadwick today opens a new aviary at Rainbow Springs Nature Park in Rotorua.
The birds to be showcased are the nationally endangered North Island Kaka and North Island Weka; along with the Banded
Rail which is now sparse and the Yellow-crowned Kakariki, which is in gradual decline; as well as the Morepork.
“Giving people the opportunity to see these birds up close gives the public an understanding of conservation issues, and
in turn, makes DOC’s work to increase community participation in conservation work that much easier,” said Steve
Chadwick.
“The range of species is fantastic and it gives us all a chance to see birds that we may never see in the wild. It is
also an opportunity to increase awareness about the survival challenges that native species face.
“Rainbow Springs, and its sister operation Kiwi Encounter, continue to be strong supporters of conservation and are
great examples of how conservation can be combined with business to provide not only a unique visitor experience but an
education opportunity as well.”
