Harawira salutes fellow MP of the North
Tai Tokerau Member of Parliament Hone Harawira doesn't often get the chance, or even want the chance, to say something
nice about political opponents.
But today, he saluted the major contribution made by his whanaunga and former Tai Tokerau MP Dover Samuels, who has
indicated he will not be contesting the next elections.
"Who else but Dover would say my going to Australia won't be a 'brain drain' because I've got 'no brains'" Mr Harawira
said. "It takes a lot of guts and a bloody good sense of humour and Dover's always been noted for both.
Mr Samuels has been actively involved in Parliament for more than a decade, contributing spirited speeches in the
chamber; making his presence felt in select committee; and always pushing hard through his ministerial duties in
industry and regional development, economic development, tourism and Maori Affairs, Mr Harawira said.
"We're kind of lucky in the North to have a string of really talented MPs with the likes of Shane Jones, Tau Henare,
Winston Peters and Pita Paraone, but I think we'd all agree that none of us are a patch on Dover when it comes to
hard-driving korero, and blisteringly honest criticism of friend and foe alike."
It's that strength of character and forthright way of talking that has made Mr Samuels a strong advocate for the issues
he is passionate about, and a powerful debater in the House, Mr Harawira said.
"Dover is well known throughout the country as a man of the sea, and on Dover's watch, fisheries and tourism in
particular have become increasingly important to the economy and future of Maori throughout the country, and
particularly in the north.
"Dover leaves the electorate in good heart and, I hope, in a safe pair of hands.
"He reckons he's going to be spending time with his family up in Queensland, but I have no doubt that when summer comes
around, he'll be back up at his beloved Matauri Bay, diving all day, and arguing and carousing with his relations all
night.
"On behalf of the people of Tai Tokerau, I wish to place on record my admiration for the strength and honesty Dover has
always shown in the House, and his commitment to the North."
