Minister announces new education developments
Education Minister Chris Carter today announced two significant advances in achieving the government’s vision for
education in the 21st century including settlement of the primary teachers’ collective agreement.
“First, I’m delighted to announce the settlement of the primary teachers’ collective agreement with the NZEI”, Chris
Carter said.
“While the details will be announced once the agreement is ratified, I can say that it’s very good news for schools,
teachers, parents, and students.
“My warmest congratulations to the teams on both sides of the bargaining table – the Ministry and the NZEI.
“The second announcement is a review of secondary school staffing, aiming to ensure that secondary schools have the
staffing resources and flexibility they need to meet the demands of delivering a 21st century education,” the Minister
said.
The review was linked to the ‘Future of Secondary Education Project’, part of this year’s secondary teachers’
settlement.
“I want to work constructively with the secondary school sector on the staffing issues which were raised during
bargaining this year. I expect the review to be completed next year.” Chris Carter said.
“We’re very clear that people and pay are both crucial to the future of a high-quality, well-provisioned education
workforce. The two measures announced today help us achieve both.”
