Statement from Bill English
“My aim over the past three days has been to help put together an experienced and united National team to win the next election and provide New Zealand with good government,” says National Party MP Bill English.
“As a result of discussions with my colleagues I will not be putting my name forward tomorrow for leadership of the National Party.
“I have seen Gerry Brownlee’s generous statement that he will not be putting his name forward for the deputy leadership.
“I have been encouraged to put my name forward, but it is finally a matter for the caucus tomorrow.”
