Leadership programme for sport and rec sector
A new programme designed to develop leadership skills will help senior executives from sport and recreation
organisations lead more effectively, Minister for Sport and Recreation Trevor Mallard said at the programme launch in
Upper Hutt today.
The eight-month pilot programme developed by Sport and Recreation New Zealand (SPARC), includes workshops, personal
assessments and personal coaching aimed to develop the skills of key leaders within the sport and recreation sector so
they can effectively lead change.
"The importance of leadership within the sport and recreation sector cannot be over-stated. The sector faces a number of
challenges to ensure that it remains relevant and accessible in the lives of New Zealanders. The SPARC Leadership
Development Programme will help sector leaders address these challenges," said Trevor Mallard.
There are 13 chief executives taking part in the pilot, including Martin Snedden (Cricket NZ), Shelley McMeeken (Netball
NZ), Matthew Cooper (Sport Waikato) and Rodger Thompson (Bike NZ).
The effectiveness and impact of the pilot will be monitored and will provide the basis for a wider range of leadership
programmes targeted at different groups within the sector in the future.
"If sport and recreation is to flourish and continue to make a major contribution to the well being of New Zealanders,
the sector needs to understand and respond to change. We need good leaders to help us do that - this is a programme with
real potential," said Trevor Mallard.
The first in a series of three-day workshops started today at Wallaceville House, Upper Hutt. This workshop will focus
on self mastery, how to lead the way, strategic vision and understanding resilience.
