ACT Health Spokesman Heather Roy today congratulated the Hutt District Health Board, and Board member Peter McCardle, for having the courage to investigate providing funding for patients who seek private treatment.
"Hutt District Health Board is facing up to the worsening problem of waiting lists by considering a contribution to patients who 'go private'", Mrs Roy said.
"Allowing a role for private providers will have wide ranging long-term benefits for the board.
"These patients will not only receive timely treatment, but both Boards and patients will be spared expensive pharmaceutical management. In addition, the likelihood of these people requiring hospitalisation further down the track will be significantly reduced.
"Both private and public providers can play a role in making Kiwis healthier, and I encourage all DHBs to look at this option.
"Healthcare should be available for everyone, easy to access and affordable.
"Breaking down the artificial wall that Labour has built between public and private health providers will allow better access to care for all New Zealanders.
"Instead of being locked into a government controlled system, DHBs should be able to buy the best quality health services, in the best time, at the best cost", Mrs Roy said.
