Recognition for war heroine overdue
A petition calling on the Government to recognise New Zealand-born war hero Nancy Wake was presented to Parliament today by National MP Sandra Goudie.
“The contribution made by this extraordinary woman should have been honoured long ago,” says Ms Goudie.
Code-named ‘The White Mouse’, Nancy Wake has never received an honour from New Zealand.
“Nancy’s outstanding courage, bravery and leadership in her work with the Resistance in World War Two earned recognition in Britain, France, Australia and the United States, but not here.
“Helen Clark has designated 2006 as Year of the Veteran. There is no better opportunity to honour a woman who epitomises all the qualities that we as New Zealanders hold dear,” says Ms Goudie.
