New Zealand First Making An Impact
New Zealand First labour spokesperson Peter Brown has welcomed the government's announcement today that it will be
increasing the minimum wage by eight percent from March next year.
"This is a significant move towards the goal of raising the adult minimum wage to $12 an hour by the end of 2008, which
is part of New Zealand First's confidence and supply agreement with the government,” said Mr Brown
"Too many hard working New Zealanders still earn around $10 an hour and New Zealand First is determined to ensure we
shed the low-wage mentality that this country has.
“This boost in the minimum wage is an important step in encouraging economic growth. Higher wages will improve living
standards for New Zealanders, and will also encourage greater productivity and investment.
“In addition to this, we are looking forward to a more comprehensive business-friendly package to increase New Zealand’s
international competitiveness,” concluded Mr Brown.
