Rape victims must wait, according to PM
National Party MP Judith Collins is appalled that the Prime Minister has made light of the situation faced by rape
victims in South Auckland whose cases are still waiting to be formally investigated by the police.
“In response to questions from National Party Leader Dr Don Brash in Parliament today Helen Clark laughed and personally
attacked Don Brash, before making the most appalling flippant comments about the serious under-resourcing of police in
South Auckland.”
Police have today confirmed there are 11 unassigned sex-crime cases in the area.
“Helen Clark continues to put her faith in a Police Minister who is clearly failing in his fundamental duty to protect
the law abiding citizens of New Zealand.
“The Prime Minister has added insult to injury today by trying to explain away the investigative delays, which police
are blaming on under-resourcing.
“Helen Clark claims to be a champion of women’s issues. If that’s true, she would be moving quickly to restore
confidence in the police and sacking George Hawkins from this key portfolio.
“The only conclusion New Zealanders can make is that in election year, protecting George Hawkins means more to the Prime
Minister than the safety of Kiwi women,” says Ms Collins.
