Sylvia Park moves a step closer
The announcement today that the massive Sylvia Park development is another step closer is great news, Auckland City
Mayor John Banks said today.
This week Kiwi Income Property Trust lodged a resource consent application to build the first $300 million stage of
retail development covering 55,000m2.
“Sylvia Park is set to be the biggest shopping centre in the southern hemisphere. Once completed in its entirety,
Sylvia Park aims to accommodate in excess of 5,000 full-time jobs,” said Mr Banks.
The mayor said the scale and concept of this project is something New Zealand has not seen before. He described the new
generation mixed-use development as world-class and a hugely exciting boost for the Mt Wellington area.
“Sylvia Park will create a new heart for the area, rejuvenating its surroundings and attracting further investment and
development.
“Auckland is New Zealand’s fastest growing city and region, with the south-east the fastest growing industrial precinct
in Australasia. Auckland City is supportive of development which responds to the needs of this area.” The Sylvia Park
development is part of Auckland City’s Tamaki Edge project – New Zealand’s biggest urban renewal project. Over the next
few years more than $1 billion will pour into the Tamaki Edge area, which comprises St Johns, Glenn Innes, Panmure and
Sylvia Park, bordering the Tamaki River.
“The location, on a major public and private transport hub, couldn’t be better. The 24-hectare site borders the southern
motorway, the south-eastern highway, the main trunk rail line and the proposed Eastern Transport Corridor, with 500,000
people living within a 20-minute drive,” said Mr Banks.
