National should be briefed over passports
The Government should brief the main opposition party, National, on its latest counter-terrorism proposals, says
National's Immigration spokesman Wayne Mapp.
He is commenting on moves by the Government to give itself more powers to decline and even revoke New Zealand passports
and citizenship for security reasons.
"Legislation this important to New Zealand's security should be bipartisan, and Internal Affairs Minister George Hawkins
needs to take this on board," says Dr Mapp.
"Adequate powers are needed to prevent New Zealand being used as a safe haven by exploiting New Zealand passports, but
National wants to see the full scope of the legislation.
"We supported the counter-terrorism legislation. From all accounts this proposal is part of that, and it is about time
for a proper briefing."
