Poverty Report Makes Sorry Reading
The latest poverty report makes sorry reading on the eve of Christmas, said Barbara Stewart, New Zealand First’s
spokesperson for Social Services.
The report released by the New Zealand Council of Christian Social Services says many of the families seeking help from
foodbanks are in debt to WINZ and to utility and electricity companies.
“We now have children who go without basic healthcare, proper food or clothing and a good education,” said Mrs Stewart.
“New Zealand is not yet a Third World country, but with reports like this we appear to be heading that way quickly.
“As we head into the Christmas period these children have no chance of celebrating with presents or Christmas dinner.
Poverty is an issue that cannot be ignored by the Government, which must do something to rectify what is becoming a very
serious problem.
“Children are the future of our country and we are allowing them to lead a life of poverty. There is little hope for New
Zealand if we cannot even afford them the basics in life, said Mrs Stewart.
