Gaps in proposed rotting homes legislation
There are some gaps in Government’s proposed legislation to address the rotting homes syndrome, says National Housing
Spokesperson Dr Wayne Mapp.
The Government today released draft legislation, a Supplementary Order Paper to the Construction Contracts Bill.
“There are some pieces missing from the proposed legislation. Mediation is still not compulsory which means people can
refuse to attend, and the legal aid issues for those who are financially hard pressed need to be addressed,” Dr Mapp
said.
National says it still hasn’t been consulted on the Government’s proposed legislation on the Weathertightness Homes
Resolution Service, as promised by Dr Cullen.
"Commendably the proposed legislation picks up the main solutions raised by National but earlier twice rejected by the
government. They have now adopted most of the main provisions of it in their own draft supplementary order paper.
"National is committed to finding solutions for homeowners and when the Construction Contracts Bill is debated in the
House we look forward to ensuring the government keeps homeowners in mind.
“We look forward to Dr Cullen consulting with us to ensure that homeowners are protected,” Dr Mapp said.
