“Royal Tour” unprecedented opportunity for New Zealand tourism
New Zealand is currently a hot destination in America—and its about to get even hotter.
The Royal Tour, a one-hour Discovery Channel documentary is ready to screen on television screens across the United States. The programme follows Prime Minister Helen Clark as she takes Emmy Award winning writer and producer Peter Greenberg through New Zealand, and will showcase some of New Zealand’s most unique tourist attractions.
Minister of Tourism Mark Burton says that this is an ideal opportunity to reach New Zealand’s target market offshore.
“Not only does the Discovery Channel have an enormous viewing audience – at last estimate more than 200 million homes worldwide - it also reaches the sort of travellers who want to come to a place like New Zealand. They are affluent, predominantly independent travellers seeking to get off the beaten track and have a unique experience.
“Tourism New Zealand has been working increasingly closely with the channel, and the work of Peter Greenberg and the team on The Royal Tour represents an unprecendented opportunity to profile New Zealand.
“The spin-offs from this programme will have huge benefits for our tourism sector.”
The Royal Tour showcases some of the best of New Zealand’s natural attractions and activities. The Prime Minister and Mr Greenberg jetboat, abseil, ice-pick and tramp their way through Auckland, Wellington, Queenstown, Christchurch, the Waitomo Caves, Abel Tasman and Whakarewarewa.
Mark Burton is pleased at the variety of attractions featured in the programme.
“The Discovery audience will see New Zealand’s spectacular landscape, unique sophisticated cultural and artistic life, warm friendly people, and breathtaking adventure.
“Millions of people in North America—our second-largest market—will see what an ideal holiday destination New Zealand is.“
