Government must take responsibility for Taupo land subsidence
National MP and Taupo resident Georgina te Heuheu has called on the Government to take responsibility for the issue of land subsidence in Taupo, that may have been created by geothermal take-off from the Wairakei/Tauhara geothermal field.
"A new area in the township has being identified as being at risk. This leaves residents facing uncertainty and suffering potential hardship with possible reduction in property values."
The implications and possible future effects of the subsidence are being analysed for Taupo District Council by consultants Sinclair Knight Merz Ltd. The results will be known in mid-November.
"In the meantime, residents should not have to face unnecessary uncertainty while debate over who is to blame for any economic loss is sorted out," said Mrs te Heuheu.
Mrs te Heuheu will talk to affected landowners and attend a public meeting in Taupo next week.
