Lack Of Government Strategy a Double Blow For Mâori Women

There is no Government strategy for women and economic development or Mâori and economic development, says Georgina te
Heuheu, National spokesperson for Mâori and Women Affairs, speaking today at the 50th Annual Conference of the Mâori
Women’s Welfare League in Gisborne.
“This represents a double blow for Mâori women,” Georgina te Heuheu said.
Mrs te Heuheu was speaking at the launch of “Mauri Ora”, a publication of the stories of Maori women who had confronted
and overcome violence and abuse in their homes.
“The other side of these stories is economic empowerment for Mâori women and their families, but as long they remain
marginalised, as they are at present, then economic participation will be difficult.
“Briefing papers to incoming Ministers show a lack of understanding of the need to factor in Maori and women into New
Zealand’s economic future.
“The biggest economic activity of this Government for women is the introduction of paid maternity leave and the
development of pay equity. While equal reward is important, it’s a far cry from economic engagement.
“Mâori women like all others want full participation in education and technology and full access to the international
economy.
“These require the promotion of the full range of economic opportunities that New Zealand offers, to ensure the economic
engagement of Mâori women and their families,” said Mrs te Heuheu.
