New Zealand First is urging Aucklanders to have their say on the selling of a number of strategic and other assets, including the Airport, pensioners’ flats and residential houses scheduled for a special Auckland City Council meeting on Friday afternoon.
“This was never part of the mayoral campaign, and as such it should be decided by referendum and not special general meeting in which the council lets its friends in to tell it what it wants to hear,” say Leader Winston Peters.
“Aucklanders need to be alert to the possibility that the ownership and control of these assets is slipping out of their grasp. It seems that while central government is claiming to have stopped the sale of assets that local government has continued the process without taking a breath.
