Minister of Maori Affairs, Hon Parekura Horomia, said Seatoun residents will benefit from the kura kaupapa moving from
Newtown to their area as it will provide the community with access to an alternative education resource and would
reflect the cultural diversity of the area.
“The fact is that the Te Kura Kaupapa O Nga Mokopuna in Newtown needs new premises and it is logical to use an existing
site, already designated for education purposes, to meet the needs of students and families from the Miramar peninsula,”
Mr Horomia said.
“I have read reports that some Seatoun residents are opposed to the kura kaupapa opening in their suburb. I encourage
them to consider the wider interests of the community they live in.
“Providing education opportunities for children to ensure that they can realise their potential and make a positive
long-term contribution to this country is far more important than any perceived property development opportunities that
some residents may have.
“This government supports diversity and opportunity in education and it supports the need for schools to be located in
areas where there are families and children from a wide range of cultural backgrounds and needs.
“Maori families are part of the Seatoun, Miramar peninsula and eastern suburbs communities and they should have the
opportunity for their children to be taught in Maori in their area if that is what they wish,” Mr Horomia said.
