Waitakeres GE Decision is Silly
Thursday 15 Nov 2001 Richard Prebble Press Releases -- Environment & Conservation
Waitakere District Council's decision to declare the city free of genetic engineering field trials is ridiculous, ACT leader Richard Prebble says.
"As a resident of Waitakere City, I believe the council would be better off to do something about the outrageous rates," Mr Prebble said.
"Most diabetics in Waitakere now use genetically-modified insulin. If GE is safe in medicines, why isn't it safe in food?
"A significant environmental problem in the Waitakere Ranges is the damage being done to native fauna by possums. Local residents don't like the prospect of 1080 poison drops forever. Scientists tell us that only genetic engineering holds prospects for long-term possum control," Mr Prebble said.
