On the death of John O'Shea, OBE, "father of the New Zealand film industry"
Associate Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage Judith Tizard paid tribute today to John O'Shea's contribution to the
New Zealand film industry.
"John O'Shea was the father of the New Zealand film industry. By consistently telling the stories of New Zealand in his
films, he has left us with a strong cultural legacy."
John O'Shea passed away on Sunday aged 81. He was a founding board member of the New Zealand Film Commission and Film
Archive. In 1990 he was made an OBE for his services to film.
"As the Minister responsible for New Zealand's film industry, I am deeply grateful for John's support and advice over
many years," says Judith Tizard.
"He was deeply committed to New Zealand film and filmmakers. He was always willing to share his experience with the rest
of the film industry.
"Our films are a major part of our national identity. They help us to understand why we are who we are. John O'Shea
taught us much about the power of film in building a strong and confident culture.
"I hope that this government's initiatives in funding and promoting New Zealand film will realise John's vision of a
healthy & vibrant industry capable of making beautiful films that tell New Zealand stories.
"My sympathy goes out to John's family, friends, and all those he mentored during his life."
