Smith Calls For ENZA Inquiry

Published: Tue 3 Jul 2001 11:51 AM
Nelson MP Nick Smith today called on the Minister of Agriculture to initiate a formal inquiry into ENZA over foreign exchange losses of $50 million and the way the company is forcing the loss onto growers.
"I have obtained important documents regarding the allocation of the foreign exchange losses that show someone is tampering with official ENZA documents.
"I have sought an urgent meeting with the Minister and his officials so I can pass this and other information onto the Minister.
"I welcome the Minister's rejection of a levy on all growers. This is an unfair imposition on growers, hundreds of whom are on the verge of financial ruin. However, this is of no help unless the scandalous $54.2 million charge of $4.50 a carton on ENZA growers is stopped," Dr Smith said.
Dr Smith said he would be presenting his proposed amendments to the Apple and Pear Industry Restructuring Repeal Bill so Parliament can solve the Apple Industry crisis at a meeting in Hawkes Bay this afternoon.
