Anderton Not Attending Sevens

Published: Fri 2 Feb 2001 02:20 PM
Alliance leader and Deputy Prime Minister Jim Anderton is giving the rugby sevens tournament in Wellington a miss this year.
He attended last year, and would have liked to have gone again this year, but he says it's more important to send Fiji a message.
"The democratically elected government of Fiji was removed at gunpoint. It is important for Fiji to know that it cannot do that and get away with no international repercussions.
"If I went to the tournament, it would send at least an equicoval message about turning a blind eye. I'm not prepared to do that," Jim Anderton said.
