Charitable and religious organisations will be hit hard as a result of the Government’s meddling with accident
insurance, ACT Deputy Leader and Accident Insurance Spokesman Ken Shirley said.
In the House today, Mr Shirley used the Presbyterian Church as an example of how insurance premiums have skyrocketed in
the six weeks since the Government restored the ACC’s monopoly and forced employers to cancel private accident insurance
schemes.
Mr Shirley told the house that cover for clerical workers employed by the Presbyterian Church has increased by 68 per
cent because of the law change.
“This just highlights the nonsense of this Government’s bungling and total determination not to listen to common sense,”
Mr Shirley said.
He said an ACT survey has shown that some employers are facing a 200 per cent increase in their accident insurance
premiums because they have been refused the right to choose and instead have been forced into dealing with a state
monopoly.
