Police Minister George Hawkins apparently feels that our Police are not capable of recording details of firearms and he
is considering outside agencies could do better said New Zealand First Law and Order Spokesman, Ron Mark today.
“In his 1997 “Review of Firearms Control,” Sir Thomas Thorp promoted several themes on privatising segments of firearms
control, but he could not say that private companies would be more efficient than Police.
“He suggested Canada as an example to follow but the Canadian system is now more than $300million over budget and
compliance levels are less than one half of predictions. That is exactly what the Minister will have on his hands if he
follows the Canadian example.
“New Zealand firearm owners are very unlikely to co-operate with an outside agency and jobbing this work out will ensure
that levels of compliance will never reach the 90% Thorp said was needed for success.
“The matter is still before the Select Committee and their report is due at the end of this month,” said Mr Mark.
