STV for Health Boards a positive move
The Green Party has congratulated the government for its decision to introduce the Single Transferable Voting System for
District Health Board elections next year.
“STV is the best system for the new Health Boards because it ensures that all significant groups in the community are
represented,” said Green Party co-Leader Rod Donald.
“The introduction of STV for the Health Board’s also paves the way for it to be available for next year’s local body
elections.
“The main argument against using STV in 2001 has been the confusion that might arise with voters having to use two
systems, first past the post and STV. With STV now being introduced nationwide there will be a voter education programme
to ensure that people understand how easy it is to use.
“Councils will also need to train their staff to use STV for the Health Board elections so that problem is now also
solved.
“My STV bill, which is currently before the Justice and Electoral Law Select Committee, should be passed by the end of
the year to enable forward thinking Local Authorities to make the switch for 2001.
“The Horowhenua District Council has already indicated their interest in taking up the option if it becomes available,”
he said.
