Job figures show National’s ideas made a difference
Today’s outstanding unemployment figures show that the previous National Government’s policies were working and making a
real difference for New Zealanders, says Bob Simcock, Opposition Employment spokesman.
“The new Labour-Alliance Government can take no credit from today’s HLFS – although they will try.
“A half a percent drop in a single quarter is an outstanding reduction in unemployment. I am pleased that the
National-led government policies and direction helped create the jobs that has given more New Zealanders the chance to
work.
“The 50,000 new jobs created over the past year show that our ideas were working for people and making a difference.
“It is hugely encouraging to see job creation highest among Maori. Giving people a job is the most positive way to make
a difference – not waiting for endless inquiries and consultation on what might help close the gaps.
“We can expect further unemployment reductions in the short term as the National Government’s legacy of growth
continues, but this will change as Labour-Alliance policies take effect.
“At every turn the new Government is shutting out employers and giving few incentives to create jobs. Already employers
are facing cutbacks to their workforces to pay for higher ACC costs. Jobs will also be cut under Labour’s plans to undo
the Employment Contracts Act.
“New Zealand workers are yet to feel the full force of these punitive policies,” says Mr Simcock.
