Britomart Funding – Face Peel – Joy Ride – Theresa Cormack – Parachuting Hero
BRITOMART FUNDING: Infrastructure Auckland has provided the Auckland City Council $45 million for Auckland’s Britomart transport centre. The money guarantees the infrastructure for the bus and train public transport interchange. Two weeks ago it looked like not happening. The Government applied pressure, but Infrastructure Auckland denied they were cowed into making the decision. A further $20m will come from transfund. Auckland rate-payers will pay the lion’s share. The project will cost $199m all up. The Infrastructure Auckland funding comes with conditions: the money will come in installments; the Council has to show Infrastructure Auckland that the project will do all it is supposed to do; and the interchange must stay a public asset.
FACE PEEL: A doctor whose patient died after cosmetic treatment has made an 11th hour about face. He was charged with manslaughter. On the first day of trial the doctor agreed to plead guilty to a lesser charge of failing to provide the necessities of life. He didn’t provide equipment that could have saved the life of the patient who died of a heart attack during the chemical face peel. He faces punishment ranging from a fine to up to seven years jail.
JOY RIDE: A survivor of a west Otago car crash believes driver fatigue may have played a part in the crash that killed two teenagers and left another in a serious condition in hospital.
THERESA CORMACK: Police are preparing to make a major announcement about the Theresa Cormack inquiry. 14 years ago the Napier schoolgirl was sexually attacked and murdered after being abducted on her way to school. A DNA profile has been built up from a hair found on Theresa Cormack’s body.
PARACHITING HERO: New Zealander Lawrence Sands has been awarded with the Australian Star of Courage for saving the life of a parachuter on as tandem jump. He took the brunt of a fall after their parachute failed to open, saving his parachuting partner from serious injury. His left leg was amputated below the knee after the accident.
