- TOUGH ON SMOKING: Tough new smoking laws will soon be on the way to Parliament. Pubs, clubs and cafes will have to ban
smoking unless they have specially designated smoking areas. Vending machines in those places will be banned. More
graphic warnings will be on packets. Some say the moves go too far. Alliance MP Willie Jackson, a non-smoker, supports
the changes but wonders if they go to far.
- GRAHAM PARRY: Disgraced gynaecologist Graham Parry has been described as a danger to public health and safety, as he
appeals against his being struck off the medical register. The judge in the case has reserved his decision.
- JOHN YELISH: The row over PM Helen Clark’s use of the word murder has reignited. Now the Government is considering
asking for some of the compensation payment made to Auckland actor John Yelish back, because he broke a secrecy deal
about the amount of the payment. The Prime Minister called Mr Yelish a murderer, when he has, in fact, been convicted of
manslaughter.
- NUCLEAR GUINEA PIGS: A Kiwi army officer who observed British nuclear blasts in the Australian desert during the
fifties says the British Government should be made to pay.
- CLARK IN KOREA: Prime Helen Clark made a big impression in South Korea today, being the first head of state to visit a
memorial for people killed in a pro-democracy protest 21 years ago.
- POLYGAMY TRIAL: Tom Green, a man who keeps collecting wives, has gone on trial for polygamy in America. He currently
has five wives, four of whom are pregnant and he has fathered 29 children. If Mr Green is found guilty of all the
charges against him he faces 25 years in jail.
