ISRAEL: Ariel Sharon is putting together a government of national unity. US President George Bush says that both sides should remain calm. Ariel Sharon is sending a delegation to Washington.
WHITE HOUSE SHOOTING: A man is in custody after shots were fired near the Whitehouse. President Bush was inside but was not in any danger. The man was taken to hospital with a gun-shot wound.
FIRES: Picton’s chief fire officer says fires around the town are still smouldering, Crews will work hard today to completely extinguish what remains.
FIJI RUGBY PROTESTS: The Coalition for Democracy in Fiji says the Fiji Rugby Team represents a racist government. A loud protest is planned for the Westpactrust Stadium on Saturday. The Manager of the Fiji Team says the team is ready for protests.
INDONESIA: Thousands of supporters of Indonesia’s President Wahid have been demonstrating in support of the President. A mob attacked the HQ of the Golkar Party, the former ruling party.
VECTOR PAYOUT: The Auckland Mayor says she will vote tonight to drop a legal challenge that is holding up a dividend payment to Auckland electricity consumers.
SOLOMONS: A second peace agreement aimed at ending years of fighting in the Solomon Islands has been signed on an Australian naval vessel.
WATERFRONT WARS: Mediation gets underway today to resolve the South Island waterfront dispute between the Waterfront Workers Union and Mainland Stevedoring. The first priority for mediation is to establish some rules for the mediation.
GREEN TOURISM: Tourism operators are being encouraged to join up to a green certification scheme.
