TAIWAN PLANE CRASH: A Singapore Airlines 747 jet bound for Los Angeles crashed and burned on takeoff from Taiwan today in a storm. But there were no fatalities reported initially later one was confirmed, with 96 people missing.
RUTH DYSON: An anti-drinking driving group says the charge laid against Cabinet Minister Ruth Dyson for drink driving proves than anyone can be busted.
RACE RELATIONS CONCILIATOR: The race relations conciliator is under fire from Maori who want him sacked. A report recommends creating a broader Human Rights Agency. Manu Paul says that the RRC should not interfere in treaty issues.
ISRAEL: Israel is trying to organise a meeting between Shimon Peres and Yasser Arafat to kick start the peace process. Peres has discussed his plans with the Israeli PM.
TOPCAT: The Topcat fast ferry service ends thus week. Ferry operators are blaming the new Marlborough Sounds speed restrictions and fuel costs.
HALLOWEEN: Halloween night activities kept police busy last night. In Johnsonville a man pointed a gun at trick and treaters. In Christchurch children smoke bombed an old lady’s house when she did not provide sweets.
SCHOOL ZONING: One of the country’s leading schools is being asked to explain how it selected its out of zone students. Some parents have accused Auckland Grammar of not playing by the rules and the Ministry of Education is investigating.
WELLINGTON POWER: New Zealand’s largest electricity retailer Transalta says it is unphased at the arrival of Trustpower in Wellingtoni.
