- SHARK ATTACK: Friends and family of Cameron Days are grieving after the New Zealander was killed by a white pointer
shark at Cactus Beach, South Australia, on his honeymoon. A second fatal shark attack occurred within 24 hours, on a
beach only 200 metres from Cactus Beach. Searchers have not been able the body of Mr Days.
- PSYCHIATRIST MURDER TRIAL: A Prominent South Island psychiatrist appeared in court on charges of murdering his wife.
He came to NZ from South Africa three years ago.
- BUSINESSMAN MURER TRIAL: Korean businessman Robert Han has gone on trial for the murder of his wife and two children
in Auckland last year. He has admitted the murders, but has pleaded not guilty on grounds of insanity. Mr Han had a
serious gambling problem that put him under serious financial stress.
- ALGAL BLOOM: The shellfish industry is breathing a sigh of relief, with the toxic algal bloom not surviving well in
the Marlborough Sounds.
- SYDNEY OLYMPICS: A Drug scandal has erupted at the Sydney Olympics involving the husband of women’s 100m sprint
champion Marion Jones. U.S. shot-putter C. J. Hunter is said to have tested positive for the banned steroid nandrolone.
The American track and field team is refusing to confirm or deny if Hunter has tested positive for the drug. He withdrew
from the competition, citing a leg injury. The scandal has sparked speculation about whether Marion Jones has taken
steroids as well.
Aboriginal Australian Cathy Freeman races for the women’s 400m title tonight.
American Maurice Green threw one of his golden shoes into crowd after he won the men’s 100m sprint gold medal. The shoe
was caught by Ben Harper, an apprentice jeweler. Mr Harper says he has no intention of selling the shoe.
