TRANZRAIL ACCIDENT: Tranzrail Becomes the first private company to become the subject of a Ministerial inquiry. Robert
Main was killed in a shunting accident in Christchurch. Five deaths in seven months. The standard they have to achieve
is a lower one says Labour Minister Margaret Wilson. Tranzrail says it wants to get on with the inquiry as quick as
possible.
KELLY TARLTON TREASURE: A former worker at the Kelly Tarlton museum in Northland appears in court charged with their
theft. The missing treasure is yet to be recovered. The man has also been charged with drug offences. He has been
remanded in custody.
CANCER INQUIRY: The cancer inquiry has packed up and left Gisbourne at the end of its first sitting. A young woman gives
evidence concerning having a morphine overdose after her mother's cancer was misdiagnosed. She says her trust in the
medical profession has been shattered. Also lawyers are outraged at attempts to stop cross-examination of witnesses.
Minister Ruth Dyson says there is an overhaul planned but it won't affect the Gisbourne Inquiry. The inquiry will resume
on July 3. They are now way behind in he hearing of evidence.
SIERRA LEONE: UN troops look like they are headed for a full scale conflict with rebels in Sierra Leone. A secure zone
has been set up on a peninsula. British troops can only survey their safe area from a distance and prepare for a rebel
attack. RAF helicopters have now moved in too.
GAS LEAK: National Bank forced to stay shut all day after a gas link in Downtown Wellington. Hotel evacuated at 4am
after the leak is discovered and lots of streets are closed off. Traffic disruption considerable. Ministry of Consumers
affairs will hold an inquiry.
WATER CRISIS: Taps run dry in Lytellton after a rusty valve refuses to reopen in the town's water supply. Port company
resorted to emergency plan. Shops forced to close.
WAIPAREIRA TRUST: SFO has completed its final investigation into the Waipareira Trust and has decided to close its
files. The SFO says a statutory investigation is not warranted.
NETBALL WITHOUT SCORE: Netball NZ urges coaches to keep the score secret at a junior level. Teachers have mixed views on
this. Students want to know however. The Australian's don't have the same idea and say learning to lose is part of
development.
