Waitara Shooting - Same Sex/Defacto Couples Rights - Petrol Prices - Bus Seige - Lockerbie Trial
WAITARA SHOOTING: Police gave their side of the story today. According to Police Wallace threatened to kill the police
officer who shot him. Flowers still mark the spot where Wallace was shot. Two on-duty officers were sent to an incident
at 3.45pm. Wallace advanced on a police officer carrying a baseball bat and continued his threats. A warning shot was
fired into the air. Wallace continued to advance and the officer then fired four shots at Wallace. A witness spoken to
by TV3 says that Wallace was unarmed when he was shot. Another confirms the police account. The police officer involved
has been moved out of town. It is too early to make any conclusions. Some in the community say that this is the
beginning of the cover-up and are threatening revenge. This is not Maori vs Pakeha.
SAME SEX COUPLES RIGHTS: Should defacto and same sex couples have the same rights as married couples. Parliament has
passed a procedural motion on this. Margaret Wilson says it is an issue of common sense and an issue that's time has
come. At present anyone who is unmarried faces an essentially lawless battle to assert their property rights. Jenny
Shipley says that Parliament will be marrying thousands of couples by default. Green MP Keith Locke is a keen supporter
of the move. Part of the problem is that Parliament does not know what it is voting on. How quickly will this move on?
The Government will move very quickly indeed. The paper will be back before Parliament within two weeks.
PETROL PRICES UP AGAIN: BP has raised petrol prices by three cents. Mobil Shell and Caltex have matched the increases.
BUS SEIGE: A bus was hijacked by a man with a knife in Japan.
LOCKERBIE TRIAL: A pair of Libyan intelligence officers have gone on trial for the bombing of a Pan Am flight 103 out of
Scotland. Relatives of the victims see the accused for the first time. Tears and drama as the charges were read. The
defence is that Libyans didn't do it the Palestinians did. A radar video showed the plane breaking up.
