F16S: The Dominion leads today with a report that the Government will not spend the money earmarked for the F16 fighter deal with the United States on other areas of defence because PM Helen Clark said yesterday that the funds simply did not exist.
PLANE CRASH: The front-page photo shows a 737 plane that crashed on landing at LAX airport and nearly ran into a petrol station. No one was seriously injured in the accident.

- POLICEMAN CHARGED WITH RAPE: a report that a Mangakino police officer is facing six sex-related charges. Constable Colin McLean, 36, appeared in the High Court at Rotorua yesterday accused of two counts of rape, one of assault with intent to commit sexual violation and three of assaults on separate women;
- DAIRY MEGA-MERGER: a report that the dairy industry’s plan for New Zealand’s biggest merger is about to turn sour. Top Sources said last night that Kiwi and Dairy Groupo would announce this week that they could not agree to merge;
- TIMBER PRICE: a report that new houses could cost 3 to 4 per sent more after a 10 per cent rise in timber prices, builders say;
- CANCER INQUIRY: a report that PM Helen Clark has called for more checks and balances on specialist doctors who practise in professional isolation;
- THIRSTY SWIMMERS: a report that three thirsty men in Queensland’s flooded gulf country walked and swam up to 30km while dragging wheelie bins to fetch beer from a pub.
