DNA SAMPLES: The Police Minister George Hawkins wants the police to have wider powers to collect DNA. He wants the police to be able to take mouth swabs from burglars and car thieves. Civil Liberties are worried about contamination of DNA samples.
HEALTH OF THE POOR: Thirty health organisations are asking the government to target health spending at the poor. The Health Minister says she will be asking for more money for health promotion.
AFGHANI HIJACKERS: Police negotiators have resumed negotiations with Afghan hijackers following the escape of the pilot and three other crew members. The two sides are now talking to each other again – say police.
NORTHERN IRELAND: There is speculation in Dublin and London that there may be a full summit to discuss suspension of the Northern Irish assembly.
ACC CHANGES: The SOE set up to compete with private insurers in the ACC market – At Work Insurance - is calling on the government not to change the competitive insurance market.
SMOKING: A health group is calling on the government to extend its proposed café and restaurant smoking ban to bars and casinos.
MINISTRY OF FISHERIES: Ministry of Fisheries says there needs to be harsher penalties for people who fish illegally following an attack on several fisheries officers by men who threw large rocks at them when they challenged them.
MONGOLIAN HELMET: Canterbury Museum says it is delighted that they have their valuable Mongolian helmet back.
